Ignore and Oppose the Cruel Bigots. Rally the Open-Minded and Win Over the Disillusioned.
Extinguish the hot angry fear-powered flame of bigotry by ignoring it. Engaging the bigots feeds their power. To change our world, focus your energy on people open to persuasion and liberty for all.
I am doubtful that we Americans are any more cruel than the people of another nation. To me, what feels off in our culture is that for all of our wealth there are still 75 million Americans who choose to continue to be cruel to the other 260 million.
The cruelty is a choice. Fear and courage are equally in us. However, the people who only train fear will be fearful. The people who train courage will be courageous.
Bigots—White Christian Nationalists, sexists, anti-LGBTQ+, ageists, ableists, theocrats and the like—have lots of fear and zero courage which they express as cruelty to everyone else.
People who fully accept one another and wish each other peace on their journey in life have little fear and lots of courage.
Whoever uses their religion to justify their cruelty demonstrates personal weakness and fear. They need to cover their cruelty with the veneer of a false good.
The rest of us see through that tactic and through them and it makes them angry. The bigot wants to be cruel on their terms without any pushback.
What they miss in their fear and anger is that their religion actually wants them to be courageous. But they have to want the courage. They have to work on it. They have to train it.
For those of us who do accept each other as individuals, we must no longer waste the precious energy of our lives engaging with the bigots and their goal of making life bad for everyone. It detracts from our life and makes our life less good. Since we should always be pursuing the good, it becomes evident that we must not engage the bad.
We must support each other. And we must find the people on the fence. We can say of the people currently on the fence that their fear and courage are balanced; while not actively a bigot they are also not actively working to stop the bigots. Presumably because they do not see a personal benefit to do so.
We must spend our time connecting with the person on the fence to get them onto our side of advocating for each other. We must help them train their courage. The benefit to them is less fear, more courage and a better life.
Oppose at every turn the bigot agenda to control our lives and remove our liberty by not voting for them and not voting for their laws. After that, just ignore them. Do not break bread with them. Do not spend time time with them. Do not check in on them or do them any favor.
White Christian Nationalists, sexists, anti-LGBTQ+, ageists, ableists, theocrats and the like can have each other. They do not want us around, so let us not be around for them. It is in fact what they want, so give it to them.
That leaves 260 million people to live with, to engage with, to work with to make life better for each of us individually and all of us collectively. Let us use all of our precious energy to pursue the good and to create the good.
No fear, only love.
